Introduction

The attached descriptions of hot springs and geysers have been prepared by Dr. George D. Marler for the U.S. Geological Survey, based on many years as a naturalist and geyser specialist with the National Park Service. Except where noted, comments are based on Marler's personal observations. This index includes most but not all of the major and some of the minor thermal features of the Firehole River Geyser Basins, with special attention to those features known to have changed in activity since first observed. Brief descriptions of the Shoshone and Heart Lake groups of springs and geysers are also included; Norris, West Thumb, the Mud Volcano groups, all activity east of Yellowstone River and Yellowstone Lake, and the Mammoth group are not considered.

Names in quotes ("Cucumber" Springs) are of relatively recent origin and have not been formally approved.

Location coordinates (example for "Cucumber": J5-750E, 700S) are precise locations on detailed U.S.G.S. maps that have been made of Yellowstone's principal thermal areas. Each map has a grid system of designated blocks, 1000 ft. x 1000 ft. "Cucumber" is located in block J5 of the Upper Basin Map, and is 750 feet east and 700 feet south of the northwest corner of the block. None of these detailed maps are yet published but copies have been filed with the Chief Park Naturalist, Yellowstone National Park, and are also available for inspection at U.S.G.S., Menlo Park, California.

Editor's Notes:

The reproduction of this manuscript is from a microfiche copy filmed in August 1973. There were some handwritten notes on the original from which this microfiche copy was made. These notes have been included in this copy and are identified as such by editor's notes and PN:.

The microfiche copy did not contain a bibliography. The bibliography included in this manuscript was developed from a version provided by Rocco Paperiello from his copy of The Inventory, supplemented by additional notations on publisher and place of publication.

Some correction of spelling was performed by the editor. Misspellings in direct quotes used by Marler were not changed and are indicated by [sic].
