Observations for 2024 August 17

With no report on activity in the Grand or Sawmill groups, and Grand's interval around nine hours, I went out at sunrise to see what was going on. I found that Rift's marker was gone, and all of the features there quiet. But I only had to wait one Turban eruption interval before Grand erupted. Unlike yesterday, at least the One Burst Eruption lasted about 10-1/2 minutes.

Afterwards, I noticed that the water levels in the Sawmill Group were high. Belgian Pool was full to the rim, while Crystal was overflowing slightly and drowning Slurp. Sawmill was high and quiet, while Spasmodic was quiet and starting to overflow. Tardy was full and overflowing, and booped once while I was taking a video of the group.

The overflow from Spasmodic ended within ten minutes, and all the water levels dropped by then.

By early afternoon Belgian had dropped about 5cm so that the side lobe was empty. At Grand there were several undistinguished Turban eruptions followed by a Turban Delay interval of over 33 minutes. The next few intervals were all around 17 to 17-1/2 minutes long.

It was six Turban eruption intervals later where Grand finally looked like there would be an attempt at erupting. Vent started to overflow a few second before Turban began a vigorous eruption. This eruption lasted for over 2-1/2 minutes before Grand finally started, with Vent in overflow and Grand was pulsating the whole time. Because of the long delay in Grand starting, Vent started just over a minute after Grand.

The first burst lasted just under eight minutes. There was never much doubt that there would be a second burst, which ended up lasting a minute. Vent & Turban quit less that a minute later. Vent & Turban quickly restarted about nine minutes later.

For the third day in a row, Uncertain was looking interesting after Grand. Didn't have a long wait before we got to see it erupt.

The moon was high in the sky, and an orange-red due to a layer of smoke. It slowly improved during the wait for the next Grand eruption, but even an hour later there was a yellowish cast and it didn't seem bright enough for moonbows.

Arrived at Grand in time for the Turban Delay eruption, but fortunately, the wait was only for two more Turban intervals. Grand tried to have a second delay, but finally started the One Burst Eruption 24 minutes after the previous Turban eruption. As expected, we didn't see any sign of moonbows, although the moon was bright enough to see details of Grand's water spikes.
