Observations for 2022 August 30

Went out to Fan & Mortar at dawn to check on it. When I saw in the predawn light Angle splashing away and the rest of Fan quiet, I figured that there wasn't much reason to stick around. Went over to Grand instead, where the interval was already over six hours.

Probably arrived at the end of a Turban Delay interval, as there was no overflow from Grand for the next Turban eruption. The waited five more Turban eruption intervals where nothing much happened. When Grand did finally erupt, it was another short One Burst Eruption lasting well under ten minutes.

Reconfigured back in the cabin, then went out to Fan & Mortar again. No change from yesterday-- lots of Fan turning on and off, but nothing from Mortar. After three hours, I left.

Back out for Grand, where the water levels in Belgian and Crystal were as high as I've seen this year. Once again Slurp was drowned, but quiet. Again, I may have arrived as a Turban Delay started, as the Turban eruption lasted over 5-1/2 minutes and the following Turban eruption had no Grand overflow.

After six more Turban eruptions, Grand started over a minute after Turban, along with about ten seconds of boops before the eruption began. It was another One Burst Eruption that lasted under ten minutes.

Almost immediately afterwards, West Triplet started to erupt. These were full bursts, not the upwellings that break the surface that has characterized it the last few weeks. Fifteen minutes in, Percolator and Sput D were also active, so it was no surprise that after 26 minutes, Rift also started. This is the first Rift start I've seen this trip, and nice to know that it started with a normal West Triplet. When I left shortly after West Triplet ended (with a duration of 45 minutes), Belgian and Crystal had dropped several centimeters, and Belgian was barely covering the lobe.

Three hours later, there was a report that Rift was still erupting.

Made one last trip down basin, and after about 45 minutes, it was obvious that there had been no change in Fan & Mortar while I was gone.

Observations for 2022 August 29

In the morning, it was a two hour series of Turban eruptions that finally led to Grand finally erupting. Once again Grand had two bursts, this time the second lasting long enough to be considered a Long Second.

During the wait, there was no activity by Sput D. Afterward, West Triplet overflowed heavily, thumped and had one splash. Belgian and Crystal had high water levels. Slurp was drowned by Crystal's overflow, which was well beyond the vent. Over at Spasmodic, the runoff channel was wet from the first overflow that i've seen this season. Oval and Churn also had high water levels.

Spent a few hours at Fan & Mortar. They were in a mode where Angle wasn't pausing, and for the first hour, there were frequent starts and stops by the other Fan vents, but nothing strong. Then there was a period of strong activity by High and Gold Vents, followed by some rumbling in Upper Mortar. It did not look promising for there to be an eruption.

In the late afternoon had a short wait for the third two burst Grand eruption in two days. The total duration was less than ten minutes, and Grand's pool stayed full for a good half minute before finally draining. Vent & Turban didn't stop. Once again, West Triplet overflowed and thumped, and there was no activity seen from Sput D.

Back at Fan & Mortar for the hour before sunset, and the activity there did not change from the previous observations. Left with no expectation of missing any activity.

Observations for 2022 August 28

A cool and smoky day, but not unpleasant like yesterday.

Unlike last night, there wasn't much of a wait, and when Grand did erupt, we got the first two burst eruption in almost a week. The second burst was not quite long enough to qualify for a "Long Second" burst.

In the late afternoon I arrived to what seemed like a Turban Delay Interval. The duration of the eruption and the lack of Grand overflow on the next Turban eruption tends to confirm that. Only had to wait for two Turban eruption intervals before we got the One Burst Grand eruption. Was only in the area for about an hour, but did not see any activity in Sput D during that time. In the morning it was as active as it had been before yesterday's Rift eruption.

Also stopped in to see a Daisy eruption, which seemed totally ordinary.

Later in the evening the local bison paid a visit to the Lodge cabin area. It stopped across from our cabin to grab some grass before heading off into the trees.

Observations for 2022 August 27

The wait for the morning One Burst Grand took two hours longer than it should have. There wasn't any Turban Delay interval, but the Turban eruption intervals were undistinguished until the there was a Turban eruption that had almost no overflow from Grand. The One Burst Grand occurred on the next interval. Prior to the no overflow Turban eruption, there was a Turban eruption with Grand having low pool waves along with a strong but short Turban eruption duration.

Came out for the late afternoon Grand eruption to see Rift in eruption. It was a cool, windy afternoon. Proceeded to waste the next six hours waiting for nothing much to happen. Rift finally ended two hours later. A half hour after that, Grand had the first Turban Delay interval. After that, it seemed like every other Turban eruption had Grand's pool looking good, with minor waves. Finally well after dark and a total of seven Turban intervals, there was a second Turban Delay interval. In the dark, no sound of runoff was heard until about the 25 minute mark. With no Grand eruption and a weak, short Turban eruption instead, and with the wind still strong, called it a night and went in.

Observations for 2022 August 26

With the only information available was that Grand was empty nine hours after the one we saw last night, figured there were several hours before time to show up again. So headed down to Fan & Mortar to do some computer work that didn't require Internet access.

About 45 minutes later, I'd finished the first task, and stopped to take a break and eat something from the food sack in the pack. Walked over toward the benches and commented on how good High vent looked. Was told the current cycle started about fifteen minutes earlier, and what we were seeing was High erupting a couple of meters high continuously, along with water pouring out of Gold. The Frying Pans were starting, and it really looked good. The radio call went out, and that caused High to stop briefly, but when it came back, it was as strong or stronger than before. We also got some rumbling in Upper Mortar

Within a few minutes, Upper Mortar had a short surge to about 1-1/2 meter high. That was followed about 75 seconds later by another, larger surge that lasted maybe 20 seconds. It died down momentarily, then all the vents-- Bottom, Lower, Main, East and Angle filled and began erupting.

Start of Eruption of Fan & Mortar Geysers, 2022 August 26

The wind and conditions for an eruption were ideal-- Warm enough that there was little steam, wind blowing downstream and away from the walkway, sun high enough in the east for rainbows. It also seemed like Lower Mortar was much more active than in the eruptions I've see over the past few years. All of the vents seemed to be taller or throw farther.

Afterwards, at Grand, it was a Turban Delay interval followed by five more intervals before we finally got the One Burst Grand. We never did find out when the overnight eruption occurred.

The next One Burst Grand Eruption took place just before sunset. Too bad there wasn't a second burst instead of one burst lasting 11-1/2 minutes. Also, this was another case where the eruption was preceded by a Turban eruption where Grand had little to no overflow.

Observations for 2022 August 25

At thirteen hours since the last observed eruption, it was time to head back out to Grand. Shortly after I arrived, there was a Turban eruption where it seemed like Grand had little to no overflow. That was followed by a slightly longer than normal Turban eruption interval and then the Grand One Burst Eruption started. At around the 8-1/2 minute mark it had a long slowdown as if it was trying to stop and pause, but never did. Had another such episode about a minute later, and the whole eruption last about 10-1/2 minutes.

Afterwards, Castle also had still not erupted since yesterday, and there wasn't much of a wait to see a six minute long minor eruption.

The mid-day One Burst Grand was after a Turban Delay interval followed by two more Turban intervals.

Spent a lot of time down at Fan & Mortar. Much of the time all I saw was a series of weak cycles. But late in the day, it appeared that we were having either some pauses, or cycles so short and weak that Angle was never starting. All that time Main vent was steaming heavily, but never showed any splashes. All that was followed by a strong cycle with some splashing in Upper Mortar when the frying pans started up. But it lead to nothing much.

Went out after sunset for another Grand. The weather forecast said no more rain or storms, but within a half hour, we started get cloud-based lightning to the south. By then it was dark. This storm built up in intensity, with lots of flashes, but no ground strikes. It slowly moved off to the east, although we did get a few moments of rain.

The One Burst Grand eruption was once again preceded by a Turban eruption that did not seem to have much overflow from Grand. The eruption itself had several false pauses starting at about 8-1/2 minutes into a 10 minute long eruption.

Observations for 2022 August 24

With Grand erupting just before dawn, there wasn't much going on. Got out to Grand about 5-1/2 hours since the previous eruption, and was it appeared that a Turban Delay interval was in progress. About ten minutes later, still well before six hours, Grand had a series of strong boops, several about 1/2 meter high.

Fortunately, it took only three Turban eruption intervals for the One Burst Grand eruption. Toward the end of the eruption, West Triplet overflowed heavily, and there was some minor splashing in Sput D.

So today someone reports multiple eruptions and other activity in "Sputnik" Geyser right after this eruption. The problem is that in the past people, especially those who haven't reported much in previous years, have mis-reported Sput D/Delta as Sputnik, so the identification of the feature being reported today could be wrong again. From the descriptions, the activity is more likely to be Sput D. (That one of the eruptions is marked as a webcam entry doesn't help the reliability.)

The problem is that Sputnik is showing signs of potential activity. During eruptions of Sput D, I've seen the area of Sputnik steaming or behaving as a frying pan, and there is a depression forming where the Sputnik frying pan is. So these reports are only going to get more confusing.

The call for Beehive's indicator came almost immediately after this eruption, so it was time to walk over to Geyser Hill. The spray during the Grand eruption made the decision as to where to wait easy, as the wind was not shifting. Because the spray and landing zone was to the north, the Indicator was not being flooded. That meant that it was taller that usual, and lasted a bit longer (just under three minutes.) Beehive itself had a bit of a short duration.

In the evening Belgian Pool and Crystal Spring were both at their high level, with Belgian just a centimeter or so below the rim, while Crystal had overflowed enough to shut down Slurp. At Grand, only had to wait for two Turban eruption intervals before the One Burst Grand Eruption that started with a sustained boop just before Grand started. Sput D appears to not have recovered fully. It was having eruptions, but the interval was well over half an hour.

Observations for 2022 August 23

A dull day. When I woke up, I found that Grand was at 7-1/2 hours and hadn't erupted yet. So went out into the fog and cold. Waited through three Turban intervals for a One Burst Grand.

For the next Grand, found that Belgian and Crystal were both high. Belgian was within a centimeter or two of the rim, and Crystal was near overflow.

Grand seems to be developing an interesting indicator for an eruption. There have been several cases in the last few days where there is no Turban Delay Interval. Instead, at some point, there is a Turban eruption without Grand overflow. Grand has erupted on the next opportunity. It's almost as if the Turban eruption prior to the no overflow eruption was a Delay Eruption. But, as in this case, the interval was normal (about 18 to 19 minutes) and the duration for Turban is short.

The no overflow Turban eruption happened before the afternoon One Burst Grand eruption. Afterwards, West Triplet had a period of heavy overflow and thumping with a few small splashes.

As the wait for the late evening Grand eruption started, we were surprised by an eruption of Oblong. Unlike most Oblong eruptions seen from Grand, there was no long period of heavy steam before water was visible (or in this case, audible). Instead, within moments it was possible to see the water in the dim light, and the sound of the eruption was obvious. Otherwise it appeared/sounded normal. Turns out that it was the second of a series.

A half hour later, we got the Castle eruption following this morning's major eruption. It was a short minor, and even from over by West Triplet it was obvious that once it stopped, at around 3-3/4 minutes, it wasn't restarting. Even when we returned from Grand's eruption, it was quiet.

The One Burst Grand was about an hour later, and once again it was preceded by a no overflow Turban eruption. Now that this pattern has been noted, I expect it to not be seen again. As for the eruption, at around 8 minutes, Grand acted like it was trying to quit. That low energy activity continued for another three minutes. When Grand finally quit, Vent & Turban stopped within moments.

Observations for 2022 August 22

An early morning eruption of Rift meant that it was unlikely for Grand to have a short interval. But I did want to be there for when it ended. But first, spent an hour at Fan & Mortar watching some sort of weak cycle where Gold and High never really turned on, and Angle just blipped a few times. Almost like it was trying to go into a pause.

I also checked East Sentinel, and all the grass growing in the runoff and splash zones showed that there hadn't been any eruption this year. The formations on the river side were plenty wet.

Finally went over to the Grand area, where Rift was still erupting. After a couple of Turban intervals, there was a Turban Delay. Before the second Turban eruption after that, Rift finally quit at least five hours after it started. During all the time I was there, Sput D was erupting also, and it quit when Rift did. About a half hour later, Sput D splashed a bit, and then started having eruptions like the ones I've been seeing previous days.

The delay ended up being seven Turban intervals. After the sixth Turban eruption, during a Sput D eruption, Rift began to show some heavy steam, looking like it does just before it starts. The Grand eruption had two bursts, with the pause lasting nearly a minute.

When I left, Belgian Pool was high, with Crystal Spring overflowing and drowning Slurp, which was actually in full slurp mode instead of being a wet fumarole.

But when I returned to the area for the next Grand, both of those features were well down, maybe as much as 20cm. Bulger was noisy but during the Grand wait it never erupted.

That Grand wait was long, as after three Turban eruptions there was a Turban Delay followed by seven more intervals. Once again, we got two bursts from Grand. The first burst ended at 8m22, which is short enough to be a One Burst Eruption, but Grand quickly had the second. The whole eruption lasted less than 10 minutes, and Vent & Turban actually continued.

It was also a night for idiocy. First it was a noisy, loud family walking to Morning Glory and back shining flashlights everywhere and shouting at each other. Then it was someone riding their skateboard down the walkway from Castle. The steady headlight and sound on the walkway made it appear to be a bicycle.

Observations for 2022 August 21

Probably waited about 15 minutes for a Turban Delay Interval. The lack of overflow from Grand for the next Turban eruption tends to confirm that. Shortly after that Turban eruption, Oblong erupted. A steamy eruption with several tall bursts on a fog-free, windless morning.

The third interval after the Turban Delay resulted in the One Burst Grand eruption.

From there, went on down to Fan & Mortar, where a couple of hours wait resulted in a weak cycle, followed by a stronger one. During the first cycle, High and Gold never looked even close to having that "is it trying to go into eruption" look that seems to occur during most cycles. Angle was off during most of that time, until the end stages.

The next cycle started quickly, with Angle on within minutes of the start of River, High and Gold. But they also had much higher water levels than before. Angle then quit, and wasn't active again until near the end of River activity.

While sitting back on the abutment in the shade, I had a weasel run across the bridge right in front of me and disappear down the slope. Might be related to the one I saw in the same location last year.

Early afternoon, and arrived at Grand with Turban erupting. Thirty minutes later, Grand was low as Turban started erupting. Grand's pool refilled, and Grand erupted about 55 seconds after Turban. During this One Burst Eruption, Grand had distinct slow-downs at around 7-1/2 and 9 minutes. They weren't quite false pauses, because there wasn't the usual tall jetting afterward.

Went back to Fan & Mortar for more observations, in which we saw a moderate cycle that included steaming from the frying pan areas near Lower Mortar. I left after an hour, only to get back to the cabin just in time for the radio call that there was a splash in Fan's Main Vent.

Got as far as Grotto when another call announced that that was the only splash, and the activity didn't look promising. As Grotto Fountain had just started, I watched it erupt along with the start of Grotto.

At Fan & Mortar, the unpromising start turned into a pause, with some more Main vent splashing. But when River and the rest of Fan started up, the activity died down. After that, suddenly the frying pans were quite steamy, with the Frying Pan vent pouring out water.

There as one more Grand eruption for the day, and it appears we arrived for another Turban Delay Interval. This time the delay was for only two Turban intervals. The first burst lasted 9m19s, which often results in a One Burst Eruption. But by bright light we could see the water sloshing around in Grand's vent. It took about 45 seconds for the second burst to start. The second burst could have stopped in time for a possible third, but the second half consisted of lethargic short jets.

Observations for 2022 August 20

Saw Oblong erupting while walking through the Sawmill Group headed for Grand. At Grand, waited a couple of Turban intervals, and then got the Turban Delay Interval. Took Grand three more intervals to recover and give us the One Burst Eruption of the morning.

Went on down to Fan & Mortar. Arrived as the Fan vents were getting quiet. Upper Mortar was rumbling a bit. And I saw some steam from the Lower Mortar frying pans.

A few minutes later all the Fan vents were quiet, including Angle. Except for a brief series of splashes a couple of minutes later, Angle stayed off for the next 52 minutes.

About a half hour after the vent went quiet, Bottom started splashing, and it could even be considered to be in a weak eruption. The runoff channel near the vent got wet during that time.

Shortly after that, River came on, and a couple of minutes later High and Gold came on strong. Five minutes later, Angle joined in. Twenty minutes after that, all the vents seemed to shut down, and Angle was still quiet when I left ten minutes later.

For the first time this year, I saw an actual normal cycle, and Angle quiet for more than a minute or two. Since it's been well over 2-1/2 days since the previous eruption, this fits in with the belief that they have recovered and have the potential for more eruptions.

Once again, Oblong erupted right as I arrived at Grand. The wait was another one of those cases where the Turban eruption durations and intervals slowly decrease. This time, the interval only had to get to 17-1/2 minutes before Grand would erupt. Sometimes it waits until Turban's interval gets near 16 minutes.

Even though the first burst lasted 9-1/2 minutes, which is more than long enough for a One Burst Eruption, we got a second burst. The water in Grand's crater sloshed about for almost a minute.

Observations for 2022 August 19

Two minutes after we arrived at Lone Star, while we were tying up our bikes, it began a major eruption. Spent about ten minutes watching the eruption, then headed off toward Shoshone Geyser Basin.

As expected, the hike in took more time than previous trips, as it's been six years since the last visit. Went in this time because we were able to piggyback on a research permit which would allow some time on the west side of the creek.

On the way in, we got to see the trail crew in action. One section of muddy walkway, just beyond the last thermal area on the trail from Lone Star, had already been replaced. Another section, the extremely muddy walk just before the start of the upgrade to Grant Pass was in progress. Was surprised to see that it was being built over steel beams, and should last a while because of that. But for now, that meant walking over the wet area on the planks of the former walkway, laid down haphazardly as a detour. Definitely had to watch your step on that.

Otherwise the walk to basin was uneventful. We arrived at just after 10:00, and went on toward Minute Man Geyser. The pool was in overflow, and Minute Man itself was noisy. We got the first eruption of the series a few minutes later. For the next three hours, it would erupt with intervals between 50 and 90 seconds.

Across the creek we saw activity from Velvet, Lion and other features that I'm not familiar with. There was also a deer grazing way back near the trees. We met up with the permit holders and split up, with one team across the creek while others stayed to make contact with those on the trail. Just as part of our group was about to cross over, Bead erupted. At that point Shield and Gourd also started, and they seemed to be active most of the rest of our visit.

So I was on the east side for a few hours. Watched and timed Minute Man, then did a survey of the other features. Triple Bulger was erupting from the nearer vent (I believe that's the blowout.) Never got any good timings, but some of the bursts were 1.5 meters high. Double Geyser was overflowing steady, with a stream of bubbles rising from one of the opening. Little Giant was quiet, while the new feature next to it seemed even larger, erupting vigorously to several meters at times.

We also made contact with several groups who came in from the lake landing to the south, as well as the Shoshone Lake patrol ranger. One of the groups had intended to spend the day exploring the area, and were surprised and disappointed to learn that the area was closed, and the best they could do was to see the western features from viewpoints along the trail. I think they also planned on doing some hotpotting.

Finally crossed over to the west side of the creek, just in time for another eruption of Bead. Then we got the first of a few spells of light sprinkles. Spent some time around Velvet, which was having intervals of about 12 minutes. Over by Coral Spring, we saw Diverted Geyser was quiet, and it started while we were there. It appears that it is usually active, so we were fortunate to see it quiet.

Did a run up to Boiling Cauldron. The sluiceway seems the same, while I'm sure the details have changed since my last visit. The bison skeleton in the nearby deep pool has become harder to pick out.

Over at the hot pot, despite the area closure, the beaver dam was in place. The boiling spring that supplied much of the water was not overflowing, so the only water source was the boiling ragged vent next to the creek. The tree which had fallen over it just before my last visit had left a pile of needles on the ground near the spring, and all the branches were blackened but in place. (I need to check, but I thought back then that pool was point onto the tree, which I thought might cause some silicification.) The little "Anthills" were all dry and quiet.

The trip back was interesting. We started back at 16:00, and until we got to the construction zone, there was constant thunder in the distance. But it never rained. I also learned, about a mile into the hike back, that my old hiking boots were finally falling apart. The sole on the heel of one was completely detached and flopping, while the other was threatening to do the same. So for the next five miles I tried to watch how I was walking and where I was stepping so I would not tear them any further. That slowed us down a bit, but I made it back to the bike without having to resort to my river crossing sandals. And my feet felt fine when we finally got to the bikes at Lone Star.

Get back into the area and learn that it's been 5-1/2 hours since the previous One Burst Grand eruption, so of course we need to go out there, even if it is after sunset.

Ended up not having to wait. Turban made a noise, and Grand immediately had an explosive start to the One Burst Eruption. There was just enough light that we didn't need to illuminate the eruption.

And while Grand was erupting, Castle started. Didn't realize this until after Grand had quit. By the time we got over there, it was already in steam phase, and with the wind, getting the entire walkway up from the bridge wet.

Observations for 2022 August 18

Turns out that Fan & Mortar erupted shortly after sunset yesterday. By this morning, they had recovered and looking like they were having Events (Main vent splashing, etc.). But the water on the boardwalk and the splash zone flowing into Backwater and the full catch basins pretty much confirmed what had happened.

So it was on to Grand, where we arrived just in time for a Turban Delay Interval. The only remarkable thing about the followup was that it took only four Turban Intervals before we got the One Burst Grand. Three or five is much more common, but the buildup to the eruption was obvious minutes before.

Observations for 2022 August 17

Just couldn't stay away, so back out at Grand well after midnight. Less than an hour's wait for the One Burst Grand eruption, which started with a nice explosive start by Grand. Since the moonlight was still bright, didn't illuminate the eruption and get the start times for Turban and Vent. Did brave the rain to the north to make sure that Vent did start at around the four minute mark.

With all the relatively short intervals since the last Rift eruption, came back out in the morning with an expectation of a short wait. That didn't happen. Instead had to wait nearly three hours for the One Burst Grand eruption. No Turban Delay intervals, just Grand never showing any signs of trying to erupt until the the final interval.

Right after Grand ended, Oblong erupted, which seems all too common lately.

During the wait, the water level in Belgian rose from being well below the second lobe (down maybe 10 cm) to having standing water in the lobe. Also toward the end of the wait for Grand, a small amount of sizzling was visible in Sputnik during the eruptions of Sput D. The intervals for Sput D's eruptions varied from 10 to 25 minutes, and I don't think I missed any, and there didn't seem to be any pattern to them.

Right after Grand, before we could untie our bicycles, Castle started erupting. This turned into a long minor eruption, over ten minutes long, with lots of pauses during the last three minutes.

It was a nice wait before sunset. Once again Grand did not have any Turban Delay Intervals, but two Turban eruptions before Grand erupted, there was a short, powerful Turban eruption, followed by a short Turban interval. It's almost as if there was some sort of delay going on.

The eruption started with a series of boops. It ended at 8m42s, and finally had a huge second burst. Following that the pool drained with no attempt at another burst, despite the duration only being just over ten minutes. And then Vent and Turban continued to erupt.

Belgian Pool was quite high by then, and it sounded like Crystal had even managed to drown Slurp a little. West Triplet also overflowed heavily after the Grand eruption, but no attempt at bursting or erupting.

Observations for 2022 August 16

When saw that Rift was erupting, decided to get some more sleep. So surprised to learn that Grand erupted as Rift ended. Did come out for the first overflow, which at 4h20m, seems longer than non-Rift first overflows by about a half hour. Also, that Turban interval was essentially a Turban Delay Interval, as it was over 30 minutes long. When I arrived Crystal and Belgian were still at a high level, with water in Belgian's lobe, but when left an hour later, Belgian was now down about 1cm below the lobe level.

Just after first overflow from Grand, Bulger started a major eruption. Within a minute, Bulger's Hole was full and starting to erupt. The eruption lasted about 40 seconds, and Bulger had a short 6-1/2 minute eruption itself. Also noticed that Sput D/Delta was having occasional steamy burst as if it was trying to erupt, but didn't have any water.

Coming back out for the Grand eruption, Belgian and Crystal had dropped even further. In quick succession we saw Grotto Fountain, Grotto, Oblong and Daisy. It was a bit of a pleasant surprise for Grand to erupt about a half hour later on only a seven hours interval. After the first burst ended, water sloshed around in Grand's vent for about a minute before finally draining.

Came out at sunset for another Grand eruption, expecting to see it in the dark. Right after sunset we saw a coyote run across the rocks at the top of the slope trying unsuccessfully to harvest a marmot. It hung around for a while, but eventually gave up and headed north.

By then it was apparent that we were having a Turban Delay Interval. At 28 minutes, Grand had several boops, but the pool stayed high. Two minutes later it booped again and then started an easily visible One Burst Eruption. Around 9m45s there was a false pause, and eruption continued for another 1-1/2 minutes.

Just before the false pause Castle started its eruption. And for once, it wasn't a minor.

Observations for 2022 August 15

When I checked, it seemed like the sky was clear and the moon bright. But by the time we gout out to Grand, it was fogging up, and calm. The steam for the two Turban eruption intervals we had to wait kept changing direction, so hard to tell where to go when the eruption started. It rained at the north end, so the walkway by West Triplet it was. Turned out to be a nice view from there, and we even got a second burst. By that time, the fog was thick, with Geyser Hill invisible from Crested Pool.

As we rode past the Inn, Old Faithful had a large pre-play surge. We stopped, and then the eruption proper began. At 03:00, it can be an impressively loud geyser, even from our vantage point between the benches and the bike path. It was also not foggy there, as the fog was drifting down basin.

By the time for the next Grand eruption, the fog had burned and been blown away, although it was still cool and damp and the sky was overcast. This time only had to wait for one Turban eruption interval before we got the One Burst Grand eruption.

For the third Grand eruption of the day, the wait was even shorter. Arrived well before six hours since the previous Grand eruption, and two minutes short of six hours, Grand had a series of large boops that started the eruption proper. In the middle of the afternoon, the benches were practically empty.

After that, spent an hour and a half at Fan & Mortar. It was having cycles similar to what I had seen a few days before the eruption. While Angle was mostly on, the rest of the vents would start and stop with discrete pauses between the activity. During that pause time, I noted that the noise from Upper Mortar would increase, and Bottom Vent would have occasional splashes.

After sunset, headed out for one more Grand for the day. The water level in Belgian Pool and Crystal Spring
remained high all day, with water well into the lobe at Belgian, and Slurp being drowned by a trickle of water from Crystal.

Did not get a Turban Delay interval, but still Grand waited until half hour before midnight to erupt. The sky was light behind the One Burst Eruption, but the moon was still well behind the ridge. Sort of the reverse timing of Grand waiting until just after sunset to erupt. But we did get to see a total of five bursts over four eruptions today.
