Observations for 2023 August 30

Made the mistake of assuming that since Grand had a short interval while Rift was erupting, the next interval wouldn't be too bad. Add in the fact that the moon was nearly full.

A minor storm came through just after dark, and while there wasn't much rain, it brought a steady wind. For the first hour or so, the moon was mostly hidden by the clouds, but then the sky cleared. Because of the wind, and despite the bright moonlight, very little steam was visible from Grand and Turban, which made it difficult to guage the status of Grand's pool.

Three hours and ten short, weak Turban eruptions after arriving we finally got a Turban Delay overflow. Since Grand didn't erupt, that meant it would probably be at least two Turban eruption intervals and 45 minutes before the Grand eruption, so we went back in. As it turned out, it appears there were probably four Turban eruptions, as Grand didn't erupt until 1-1/2 hours later.

Getting a Beehive eruption at sunrise was a minor consolation. The long Indicator eruption gave people plenty of time to get into position. It was still windy, and the wind shifted enough to make the few people there move back.

Observations for 2023 August 29

August weather finally arrived today, with a clear morning that warmed quickly. Out at Grand there was an eruption of Oblong shortly after I arrived. Only waited two Turban eruption intervals (with a Daisy eruption during the second). But that last interval was a Turban Delay Interval lasting almost 35 minutes. Grand's pool did not look good when Turban started, but we ended up with a One Burst Grand Eruption (nicely backlit) about 80 seconds later.

To enjoy the good weather, went out and spent some time at Grotto, which was not close to erupting, then caught a Daisy eruption. By that time, Rift was in eruption, which of course disrupted some plans for the rest of the day. Shortly afterwards, Castle started, and since there had been a minor in the morning, decided that a major eruption was most likely, so went there to watch the transition into steam. It was way too early for rainbows.

With Rift erupting, I decided there wasn't a good reason to be out early for the Grand eruption. So I missed the One Burst Grand that appears to have happened during the Rift eruption.

Another reason to skip Grand was that I had been invited to go to the roof of the Inn, and didn't want to have to abandon Grand. The weather conditions were ideal, but unfortunately, nothing much was erupting. Did see Little Squirt, Little Cub and White from up there.

During that time, the bellman/guide mentioned a mudpot making loud thumping noises. Based upon what he said, we eventually found it just south of the High Bridge where the road to Craig Pass crosses the river. The route to it starts at the Mallard Lake Trailhead. Don't cross the bridge, but head right/west toward the employee fire-ring. As we approached there, we heard a low thumping off in the distance. We followed the sounds and eventually arrived at the mudpot, on the cabin side of the river, on the hillside below the old campground. There are several pools in the mud volcano, all at different levels and liquidity. The one making the noise was the deepest, and no water was visible, just noise and steam.

Observations for 2023 August 28

Was bicycling past the Inn when I noticed there was a lot of steam around Beehive. At first I thought I'd missed the call for the Indicator, but then Beehive started along with an announcement of "no Indicator". So Beehive must've had some huge splashes. Watched the eruption for a bit, then went on to tie up my bike at Castle. Walked out toward Crested, and Beehive was still in eruption, almost six minutes later.

Over at Grand it seemed like I walked up on a Turban Delay Interval, and the following Turban eruption without any Grand overflow seemed to confirm this. The Delay took place well before I'd expected Grand, so I hoped that it meant we'd have only a few Turban eruptions to wait out before getting a relatively short Grand interval.

As it turned out, it took Grand 11 Turban eruptions before we got the One Burst Eruption.

The after sunset wait was much better, as there seemed to be no Turban Delay Interval this time, and the One Burst Grand Eruption started near the 6-1/2 hour mark. The conditions were ideal for a nearly full moon eruption, with the usual down slope wind pushing the steam toward the north. But no moonbows this night. And despite the early prediction window, only geyser gazers were present.

Observations for 2023 August 27

It was foggy in the Lower Geyser Basin, and we arrived by bicycle at Great Fountain while it was in eruption, probably the third series of bursts. Knowing the time of an eruption, decided to attempt to see the next eruption that evening.

In the afternoon, went out ot Grand as the weather was getting worse. Fortunately, and despite a long Turban Delay Interval, got to see the One Burst Grand eruption before the rain.

The forecast storm never really materialized, so by 19:00, went back to Great Fountain. Arrived to find the water level in the crater out of sight. Over the next hour, as the sun set, the water level would come into sight, only to sink again. After sunset, the overflow had not yet started, so we decided to head back instead of waiting at least another 1-1/2 hours.

The sky had cleared by the time Grand was due to erupt. Waited for an hour's worth of Turban eruptions, then got the One Burst Grand eruption that lasted less than ten minutes. But as we were crossing the bridge, Castle started erupting. For once, a Castle eruption with the moon in the proper location resulted in a major eruption with full arc moonbows starting about the time the eruption turned into steam.

GeyserLog 3.5.1

GeyserLog 3.5.1 is now available on the iOS AppStore.

Field testing of 3.5 found a number of minor issues which have been fixed:

  • The ending time picker for editing notes has been expanded to five lines, which will make it a bit easier to use.
  • Number of bursts can be entered in the Code variable, and displayed. Useful if Plume ever reactivates.
  • The Circle-O button allows filters to be created for non-Yellowstone areas.
  • Added missing Stopwatch button to Grand Wait
  • Added an action for Grand Wait view to manually update the previous Grand eruption time. Useful when the overnight electronic time is finally posted.
  • Fixed duplicate display of Turban ie before arrive in Grand Wait view.

Observations for 2023 August 26

Wanted to go out to Grand last night, but rain started just about the time to head out. Looking at the weather maps, it looked like it wouldn't clear before the moon set, so stayed in.

That rain made it extemely humid, and there was a thick fog in the morning. It didn't help that at the time I didn't know when the previous Grand eruption had happened. Turned out I probably saw the first Turban eruption after Grand's first overflow. So ended up waiting two hours. After that, it was still fogged in, and dead calm when we got the One Burst Grand eruption. Afterwards, as I biked back in, the fog was starting to break at the south end of the basin.

Was still not totally clear when Beehive erupted, but because it was calm, the water column was straight up, and only a portion of the walkway got wet.

There was another event at Fan & Mortar. As in the previous cases, Bottom Vent had a strong eruption, Main Vent was splashing, and Lower Mortar was also high. But while Fan's vents started strong, after a couple of minutes they'd died down well before Angle started.

The midday Grand eruption was a bit of a fiasco. I went out early because I had not much else to do. Almost immediately I caught a Turban eruption, one which lasted almost six minutes. That's usually the sign of a Turban Delay Interval, and when the next Turban interval had little Grand overflow, I was pretty sure of that.

Around the time of the second Turban eruption after that, I looked at a weather map and saw that there was a pretty strong thunderstorm headed our way. That's when the NPS radio had a severe weather alert, with one inch hail and 40 mph winds headed our way. Normally, with less information and with the way the sky looked, I'd have just hunkered down and waited the weather out. But the "one inch hail" part was enough to make me decide to clear out. I got into the trees between Liberty and Lion when the hail started, and decided that was a better place to experience hail than Geyser Hill. Turns out less than ten minutes later, the sky was clearing and the rain was mostly over. So much for the "severe weather."

I headed back to Grand, and arrived at about 22 minutes after the previous Turban eruption start. Grand was obviously in heavy overflow, and having another Turban Delay interval. Most of the people who had been waiting for Grand, gazers and tourists, had cleared out. At exactly 25 minutes, Turban started, followed almost immediately by the One Burst Grand Eruption.

There were clouds obscuring the moon as we went out to Grand. Once again, I saw what appeared to be a Turban Delay interval when I arrived. Fortunately, Grand erupted just two Turban eruptions later. Not only did we get a second burst after a fairly long first burst, but the moon was shining through a clear spot in the clouds.

Observations for 2023 August 25

Not knowing when Grand erupted overnight, I went out at the twelve hour mark. Turned out that was a bit early, but I did get to see Castle have a major eruption after having a second minor eruption overnight. Grand also had an early Turban Delay interval. About 32 minutes in, I heard a boil or boop from Grand. It was another three minutes until Turban finally erupted, so a boop then fits the usual pattern.

On the second Turban interval, Grand's pool looked good enough to erupt, but didn't, and it took Grand two more Turban eruptions before we got the One Burst Grand eruption. Beehive also erupted during that wait.

For the afternoon Grand eruption there was finally no Turban Delay interval. Just a series of Turban eruptions. The interval was about one Turban Interval longer than expected, at just over 6-1/2 hours. Just before Grand did erupt I saw what I thought was Uncertain. It was hard to tell, as at first it was a thin, continuous water column about as high as an Uncertain eruption. Then the column was interrupted by pauses, and finally just quit without going into a mild steam phase. It was just Tardy having one of its weird Sawmill Group Deep Drain eruptions. It was hard to tell at first without landmarks (or tourists standing nearby) and because it just didn't look like Tardy.

The Grand eruption itself had an 8m20s first burst, nicely followed by a second. Grand's vent showed water for a third, but drained after about ten seconds. Was a bit surprised to see Vent & Turban continue.

Observations for 2023 August 24

Out to Grand on a foggy, damp morning. Only waited one Turban eruption interval, which turned into a Turban Delay eruption interval of 33-1/2 minutes. Because of the fog, it was hard to tell what the pool was doing after Turban started erupting. But a minute in, Turban was still powerful and vigorous, and the steam over Grand's pool seemed to have increased. So I wasn't surprised when after 1-1/2 minutes of Turban erupting, Grand started also. This was another long One Burst Grand eruption lasting almost 11-1/2 minutes.

With Little Squirt active yesterday, and nothing much else going on, decided to spend time on Geyser Hill over by Aurum. The vents were splashing around, but I don't know enough about it to know if we were close to an eruption. In any case, about a half hour later we got the call for Beehive's Indicator. I arrived at the benches just in time for Beehive to have a huge surge and being erupting. After the Beehive eruption, Lion had the second eruption of its series.

The midday Grand eruption was similar to this mornings, where once again Grand erupted after over 31 minutes of a Turban Delay interval. This time Grand started the eruption with an explosive burst as high as the trees, as seen from the benches. And once again, it was a long One Burst Eruption.

Went out early for the next Grand, because it was the first nice sunset, with no wind or clouds, in quite a while. Ended up seeing another Turban Delay interval, this time at the 5-1/2 hour mark. But the One Burst Grand occurred only three Turban eruption intervals later, so the Grand interval was just over 6-1/2 hours. By then it was dark. Only four geyser gazers were there for the start, but the quarter moon gave plenty of light so no flashlights were used.

Observations for 2023 August 23

Rift had quit erupting by the time I got out to Grand. Not knowing the start or end time, but I suspect the eruption lasted less than three hours.

So it was a bit of a surprise when there was a Turban Delay interval just after the six hour mark. With no Grand eruption, that meant that the Grand interval would be the longer expected with Rift activity.

Six Turban eruptions later, there was a second Turban Delay interval. Fortunately, Grand had a One Burst Eruption about 31 minutes after the previous Turban eruption.

Afterward, Bulger was frequently rumbling, while Belgian and Crystal were both extremely low. Sawmill had been erupting for most of our Grand wait, but was now quiet, and Uncertain did not look like it would erupt.

Crystal Spring, 2023 August 23.

Afterwards, realized it had been 17 hours since we had seen Castle erupt last night. Turned out that Castle needed an additional half hour to finally erupt, and even then there were multiple pauses during the first five minutes. But it finally stopped pauseing and we had the second major eruption in a row.

Going out to Beehive after the Indicator call, we first saw Little Squirt in eruption, then the Lion eruption starting a series. Once again it was windy, but the wind didn't shift so only a portion of the boardwalk west of Plume got doused.

Went out for Grand expecting it near sunset. There was a series of undistinguished Turban eruptions, then Grand filled quickly and we got the One Burst Eruption on the last opportunity before sunset. This time the duration was less than ten minutes.

Observations for 2023 August 22

Got out to Grand at the 12-1/2 hours mark, and didn't have enough time to get set up before the eruption started. It was a two burst eruption, and once again, around the 40 second mark of the second burst Grand went into Big Sawmill mode where it looked like it was going to stop, but would keep thrashing around with jets and boils less than 10 meters high.

After breakfast, went out to see this morning's Castle minor eruption. It lasted about 5-1/2 minutes, and was already having pauses at the three minute mark.

The weather was heavily overcast, but with little rain forecast. Unfortunately, there were showers showing on the radar map headed our way. At around the six hour mark, Grand had a strong Turban Eruption Interval which caused the eruption to finally happen five Turban intervals later. Fortunately, the showers didn't really appear, although after yesterday I didn't take any chances.

Once again, Grand had a short first burst and a long second, where the second was long (this time by one second) and much of that time was in Big Sawmill mode. Not only that, but the whole eruption lasted less than ten minutes.

Beehive finally erupted a few hours later. The wind by that time was steady and strong, so I decided that the railing near Plume would be save, and it was. The winds didn't shift during the eruption, so the only area that got wet were the two benches and the wide platform. Since Old Faithful erupted at the same time, the crowd for Beehive was small.

It took six Turban eruption intervals from arrival at sunset to the One Burst Grand eruption. During that time we got to see Daisy erupt, a magenta sunset, and Castle finally have its major eruption after this morning's minor eruption. Grand was a disappointment, as the duration was just under 9-3/4 minutes. A minute after the eruption ended Vent & Turban got quite powerful, then calmed back down.

Observations for 2023 August 21

A much nicer day than yesterday, although did have to wait about an hour in the morning for the last of the showers to end. Out at Grand it quickly went from cool to calm, sunny, warm and humid.

Before going to Grand, I was able to catch a short Castle minor eruption. Grand had a nice steamy backlit two burst eruption where the pool actually held water for about ten seconds after that second burst. Once again Grand erupted at the first opportunity after the six hour mark, so I expect until the next Rift eruption to be out there on the short side of the interval.

And of course, before completely packed up from the Grand eruption there is the radio call for Beehive's Indicator starting. Instead of treking to Geyser Hill, I decided to watch from Sawmill, which was in eruption.

There were still showers in the forecast when it was time to head out to Grand, but no rain right then. A hour later we got heavy winds, heavy rain and raisin sized hail between two Turban eruptions, and then another shower as Grand erupted.

The leadup to the Grand eruption was different. Right after the hailstorm there was a short Turban eruption interval, followed by an extremely short Turban eruption duration of just over 2-1/2 minutes. Then the Turban intervals got even shorter. Grand's pool was full within ten minutes, and the overflow could be heard as soon as eleven minutes after the Turban eruption.

Three Turban eruption intervals later Grand's pool was full and it slowly over the span of about five minutes built into waves and then some boops. It was so humid and steamy that I could not see any of the side activity. But the first burst ended after only 7-1/4 minutes. The pause was short, but the second burst ended up lasting about 2-3/4 minutes. After the first 50 seconds, it appeared as if the burst was going to end, and that was when we went into Big Sawmill mode for the rest of the eruption,

Observations for 2023 August 19

A cool damp day that threatened to rain at any time. Out at Grand we saw a couple of Turban eruptions before we got a Turban Delay Interval. It was relatively short (28 minutes) and Grand's pool never looked like an eruption was emminent. Three Turban intervals later, the pool did look good. Turban started, and it took Grand nearly two minutes to finally erupt, from a pool that mostly filled after Turban had started. For the first time in days, Grand had a short first burst, but a second burst lasting 2-1/2 minutes.

Went out to Grand early in anticipation of rain. Turned out we got a few sprinkles during the wait, but far less than the forecast and weather radar would have indicated.

Once again Grand had a Turban Delay Interval on the first Turban eruption after I arrived. Three intervals later Grand had a strong fill, failed to erupt on a otherwise normal Turban interval. It was two more Turban intervals after that before we did get a Grand eruption that lasted just over ten minutes.

Observations for 2023 August 18

The Lone Star trail head parking was closed due to masonry work and a need for repaving, so we had to park at the Keppler Falls parking.

Lone Star started erupting as we were tying up our bikes. So spent fifteen minutes there watching a nice dawn eruption.

The weather for the day was forecast to be unsettled, and it was. Sunny while we watched Lone Star, by the time we got to Grants Pass to fill up the water bottles, it was breezy and partly overcast. Fortunately, the mosquitoes were few, and our New Zealand sandfly repellent works well on them, too.

The bridge being constructed last summer was finished, and as typical of the NPS, it was a three-quarters assed job. The bridge ended about ten yards short, so one transitioned from a nice, steel bridge to slabs of left over planks crossing mud. Whoever planned the project seems to have assumed that a wet area next to bridge would not get worse in one year. Really detracted from the nice work done. (Similar problem at the bridge near site OA-2-- two of the side logs have fallen over the edge next to the new bridge there.)

Speaking of bridges, fording Shoshone Creek where there used to be bridges went well. As annoying as it is to have to take off and put shoes and sock back on, the icy cold water felt good on the feet for the next few hundred yards of hiking.

Arrived in the Shoshone basin to find someone reloading his pack while next to Soap Kettle. I reminded him that he was off trail out there. When he passed by us over in the trees by Minute Man a few minutes later, we wanted to argue that we were off trail too. I pointed out that at least we weren't messing around on the platform of an eruptive feature, which is the whole point of the closure.

As for Minute Man, it was quiet, and the pool well below overflow. As we waited for the rest of our party to arrive, the pool slowly filled and started overflowing. Over on the other side of the creek we were seeing Velvet erupt every ten or eleven minutes. Saw Shield and Gourd start up and then Minute Man started as I was wading across the river.

Was a strange, short period of activity for Minute Man, with about three or four eruptions in the series, then the level of the pool dropped and activity stopped for about another hour.

Over on the west side, spent a bit of time taking video of activity in Velvet, Lion, Small and aborted Knobby eruptions. Bead seemed uncooperative, but of course it erupted right after I returned back over to Minute Man, which was erupting in a full series by then.

Went through the Orion Group, where Union seems unchanged from previous visits. The water level is still well down, but it seemed like it hasn't gotten worse over the years.

To the north, I saw several splashes from Triple Bulger. It looked like #12, just downslope from Shield and Gourd (which were erupting again) had not had one of its floods in several hours, as the formations were dry where there wasn't direct overflow from the incoming waters. Five Crater seemed quiet, too.

The mosquitoes were out a bit more on the trail as we left, but I've experienced much worse. As we dropped down from the pass we heard some thunder in the distance, and felt a few drops, but that was the extent of the weather for the day. At Old Faithful, it appeared they had gotten a shower hard enough to leave puddles.

Walking back I realized that we would probably arrive just after twelve hours since we saw Lone Star. I expected we'd miss it by a bit. So was surprised that it was completely quiet, except for steaming and an occasional jet from a couple of the vents. The book listed eruptions, the last about ten minutes before we arrived, but they sounded like minors. So we waited there and after about half an hour, were rewarded by the second major eruption of the day. It appears that it must've had two minor eruptions preceding the that one, which considerably lengthened out the interval.

It was a pretty dull trip. I ended up not as worn out as I had expected.

Observations for 2023 August 17

Sleeping in too long means going out to Grand and barely catching the early daylight eruption. Did get out early enough to see the Turban eruption where Grand didn't overflow, and then get the almost 12 minute One Burst Grand eruption.

Afterwards noticed that a number of the features in the Sawmill Group had water levels much higher than usual. So I got to see Oval Spring erupt to about 1/2 meter from a full pool, then drop about 30-50 cm afterwards. Spasmodic was high, but nowhere near overflow.

Down at Fan & Mortar there was some event activity, with Bottom Vent erupting enough to put water down to the river, multiple large splashes from Main Vent, and Lower Mortar high and vigorous. But nothing much came of it, other than the Fan vents showed a short resurgence just as everyone was about to leave.

In the afternoon there was another Turban Delay Interval followed by seven more intervals before we got the long One Burst Grand Eruption. This one featured multiple false pauses during the nearly twelve minute long eruption.

Observations for 2023 August 16

When I saw that it had been over seven hours since the Grand eruption we were at last night, I went on out again. Waited a full Turban eruption interval and then got a steamy One Burst Grand that lasted less than 9-1/2 minutes.

With Beehive active before dawn, it seemed like a good Lower Basin day. Since nothing expected from Fountain for a few hours, rode the bikes out to Great Fountain.

Arrived there and the water level was high, but well below overflow. After an hour, and several White Dome eruptions, Great Fountain overflowed for a few minutes, the receded below the level it was at when we arrived. It was another 40 minutes before the real overflow began.

The overflow lasted 80 minutes, and up until the 70 minute mark, we had the place to ourselves. During most of that time White Dome was quiet. That's when two families arrived. The pause at the start of the eruptions lasted about 1-1/2 minutes. The action wasn't Great Flounder class, but was definitely nothing big or spectacular. There were a few nice bursts angled toward the benches.

We stayed until the end of the third burst. On the way back Pink Cone was in eruption, which was a nice bonus.

When I went out to Grand for the sunset eruption, there was so much overcast (and probably smoke) that the sky was mostly gray. West Triplet was just starting to overflow, which is the first time I've seen that since early in this visit.

After a couple of Turban eruptions, Grand started to behave as if there was going to be a Turban Interval Delay. At around the 23 minute mark the boops started, and lasted for a full minute. Some of the boops were several meters high and wide. The start of Grand's One Burst Eruption was weak, but it lasted almost 12-1/2 minutes with few slowdowns. It took over a minute for Turban to start erupting, and it was finished within seconds of the end of Grand's activity.

Observations for 2023 August 15

Grand wasn't erupting as I biked past the Lodge. It was erupting as I approached the Inn. I turned around and let others enjoy the One Burst Eruption (and it was one) to go back to sleep for a while longer.

A few hours later, was expecting Beehive, but probably not soon. So intended to wait over by Aurum for the Indicator call. Waited less than ten minutes. Between the call and Beehive's eruption, also witnessed the second Lion eruption of the series, and a Plate eruption. I haven't seen Plate up from on Geyser Hill in a few years, and it seemed to me that the eruption was much larger than way back then. Beehive itself erupted in almost dead calm condition, with the spray and condensation settling on the walkway down by Plume.

For the next Grand we only had to wait for a few Turban eruption intervals before we got the Grand eruption a bit late in its early window. The first burst lasted almost 9-1/2 minutes, so it was a pleasant surprise to once again see a minute's worth of sloshing about in Grand's crater before we got the second burst. Despite the length of the eruption, over 11 minutes, Vent & Turban did not quit this time.

For the next Grand wait, went out about three hours after the start of a Rift eruption. Did not expect or intend to be still out there four hours later.

When I arrived, I noticed a new sputtering hole, or at least one I didn't remember seeing previously. It is located about 1.5 meters from Sput D, directly on the line between Sput D and West Triplet. The vent is tiny, and the sputtering was only a few centimeters high. But it continued, along with Sput D's activity, as long as Rift was erupting. Until I can confirm that I didn't use the designation before, I'll refer to this as Sput G.

Sput G (in box) and Sput D erupting.

The second Turban eruption since my arrival was a Turban Delay Interval. From there, it took twelve more intervals before we finally got the One Burst Grand eruption. Rift itself ended after the fourth interval, for an approximate duration of five hours.

Just before Grand erupted we got a little diversion. Ben Vanderley noticed that Bulger was erupting, and it was a major. In the dark, the gazers waiting for Grand ran down there, to the confusion of various visitors who were still waiting in the dark for Grand. Within a minute of Bulger starting, Bulger's Hole began erupting.

It was a strong eruption, with heights to about 4 meters at times. The activity slowed down twice as if the eruption was ending, then came back strong. There wasn't any sound effects from the Hole when it drained. The total duration of the eruption was about three minutes.

After Grand we hung around Bulger in case there was a second major and Bulger's Hole eruption, but after about 1/2 hour it was obvious that the one eruption was it. As we walked away, we noticed that Sawmill was quiet and Uncertain was steaming gently. It seemed obvious that in the dark we'd missed an eruption, about 20 minutes earlier, perhaps during an eruption of Old Tardy.
