Observations for 2024 August 27

Woke up to find that Grand had erupted about a half hour earlier. Not too disappointed, as it was cold and foggy out even after sunrise. Then we got the morning Beehive Indicator call. Went out with the intention of getting a video. The fog pretty much lifted during the wait for Beehive.

Little Squirt was in eruption, so after Beehive's eruption I got a few minutes of it. During that time it slowed down and almost quit. Since it was calm and Geyser Hill was empty, I stayed on to get about a half hour of Anemone erupting. During that time Little Squirt finally did quit. As for Anemone, I got some short South eruptions, and a long one, as well as several North eruptions. It was interesting how North Anemone would wait until noisy people were nearby before finally erupting.

Back in the cabin, I heard over the NPS radio that the Great Fountain prediction was for 11:15, but it was in overflow. This was around 08:45. I guess that this person didn't understand that a prediction based on overflow superseded the one based on the previous eruption. In any case, made the immediate decision to head out and try to see Great Fountain. It was my first visit to the Lower Basin this trip.

We arrived and had maybe a five minute wait. The first series had several nice bursts, which I got on video, so it was a slightly better than Adequate Fountain. Then went over to Fountain Paint Pots on the off chance that Fountain might also erupt. After an hour, we gave up and returned. Fountain didn't erupt until several hours later.

About an hour after the morning Grand eruption, Rift was reported to be in eruption. Went out to Grand at about the 6-1/2 hour mark, and Rift was still in eruption. We just missed a Turban Delay Interval, and proceeded to wait several hours until Grand finally had its One Burst Eruption. Toward the end of that time, Turban was having eruption durations less than three minutes long, and intervals under 16 minutes long. It also had a pseudo-delay, where the Turban interval suddenly jumped by about six minutes, and was followed by a Turban interval with no overflow. During the wait we also saw a nice Oblong eruption, one much larger than the ones I've seen earlier this trip.
