Observations for 2022 August 23

A dull day. When I woke up, I found that Grand was at 7-1/2 hours and hadn't erupted yet. So went out into the fog and cold. Waited through three Turban intervals for a One Burst Grand.

For the next Grand, found that Belgian and Crystal were both high. Belgian was within a centimeter or two of the rim, and Crystal was near overflow.

Grand seems to be developing an interesting indicator for an eruption. There have been several cases in the last few days where there is no Turban Delay Interval. Instead, at some point, there is a Turban eruption without Grand overflow. Grand has erupted on the next opportunity. It's almost as if the Turban eruption prior to the no overflow eruption was a Delay Eruption. But, as in this case, the interval was normal (about 18 to 19 minutes) and the duration for Turban is short.

The no overflow Turban eruption happened before the afternoon One Burst Grand eruption. Afterwards, West Triplet had a period of heavy overflow and thumping with a few small splashes.

As the wait for the late evening Grand eruption started, we were surprised by an eruption of Oblong. Unlike most Oblong eruptions seen from Grand, there was no long period of heavy steam before water was visible (or in this case, audible). Instead, within moments it was possible to see the water in the dim light, and the sound of the eruption was obvious. Otherwise it appeared/sounded normal. Turns out that it was the second of a series.

A half hour later, we got the Castle eruption following this morning's major eruption. It was a short minor, and even from over by West Triplet it was obvious that once it stopped, at around 3-3/4 minutes, it wasn't restarting. Even when we returned from Grand's eruption, it was quiet.

The One Burst Grand was about an hour later, and once again it was preceded by a no overflow Turban eruption. Now that this pattern has been noted, I expect it to not be seen again. As for the eruption, at around 8 minutes, Grand acted like it was trying to quit. That low energy activity continued for another three minutes. When Grand finally quit, Vent & Turban stopped within moments.
